Is Boba Tea Gluten Free?
With 8.4% of the population suffering from gluten-related disorders, and even more opting for a gluten-free diet, thousands of people look for delicious foods and drinks which they can consume. If you are among them, and you wonder if boba tea is gluten-free, read this article – we will answer this question here!
Is Bubble Tea Gluten Free?
To answer whether boba tea is gluten-free or not, we need to pay attention to the ingredients that it contains.
Tea
Milk
Toppings
Ice
Tea, milk, and ice naturally do not contain gluten, but what about the toppings? It all depends on what they are. Surprisingly tapioca, and thus boba pearls, is completely gluten-free, but with more unusual bubble tea add-ons the case might be different, so it is best to ask the boba barista to ensure that your toppings fit your diet. But, to answer the question in the title: yes, bubble tea itself is completely gluten-free.
The only case in which this might not be true is when discussing fruity bubble teas. It doesn’t necessarily mean that they contain gluten, however in many boba stores you’ll find them prepared and processed, then those may potentially contain gluten.

What Is the Risk of Gluten Contamination in Boba Stores?
Knowing that there are some ingredients that contain gluten, you might be worried about the risk of gluten contamination. But, is it truly a threat, or maybe there is nothing to worry about?
It all depends on what contains gluten in your boba store. At Sharetea the risk is minimal since we don’t use toppings nor syrups that could contain this protein. But, in stores that have non-gluten-free add-ons, this risk rises.
The main concern here is about cross handling of gluten-free and gluten topping. If the same tools are used for both types of add-ons, chances are that the gluten-free toppings will get contaminated.
Syrups are, on the other hand, not a major issue, since it would be extremely difficult for them to get in contact with any other product. Nevertheless, they still slightly increase the risks, since hypothetically they could get spilled on the tools which are later used to pick up toppings or mix the bobas.
The Takeaway
Is boba tea gluten-free? In most cases, yes. The main bubble tea ingredients do not contain gluten, but some toppings or syrups used for flavored bobas might. It’s worth noting that at Sharetea, all add-ons and almost all bubble tea flavors are completely free of gluten. Combining that with the minimal risk of gluten contamination at our stores, we will be the perfect choice for anybody who has to keep a strict gluten-free diet.
